Seats and child restraints first
Count how many child seats you need now and in two years. Check top-tether points, ISOFIX positions and whether an adult can still sit between two seats.
Third-row EVs exist in Australia but the list is short, and boot space behind a third row is often minimal.
Range that survives real family use
Family driving is short and frequent, with occasional long runs. If you can charge at home, a mid-range battery usually covers a whole week without thinking about it.
For the two or three long trips a year, DC charging speed and route planning matter more than total battery size.
The practical details
Boot shape, pram fit, rear air vents, door aperture, and whether the car has a frunk for charging cables all make a bigger day-to-day difference than headline performance figures.
Safety ratings should be checked per variant and per year of build, not per model name.
How we help
Tell us the ages of the kids, the school run distance, whether you tow, and what you can charge with at home. We'll shortlist the electric SUVs that genuinely work for your household — new, demo or used.
General information only, written for Australian buyers. Specifications, pricing and availability change — we'll confirm the details for the cars on your shortlist.
